Translational Research in Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia
New research out of Boston Children's Hospital-one of AUCD's Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (IDDRCs)-provides new insight into a group of genetic diseases called hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs). Features of HSPs include progressive motor impairment and moderate to severe intellectual disability.

Understanding Social Behavior in Autism: A Diverse World of Unique People

People use language to tell others what they want and need. In autism, some kinds of social communication (like language, eye contact, and hand movements) can be challenging. The goal of my lab at the Center for Autism Research is to understand and support social success for autistic people, especially in the areas of speech and language.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Introduces Two New Toolkits to Ease Stress Caused by Needlesticks in Patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) has introduced two brand-new toolkits created to alleviate fear and stress in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) when needlesticks are part of a medical appointment. One toolkit is designed for parents as they prepare their child for a shot during a visit to the doctor, and the other toolkit is for health care providers and clinical researchers who may give vaccines or perform blood draws on patients with IDD as part of their work.

DDNJ Call for Reviewers
The deadline for signing up as a reviewer for this special issue is July 15, 2022.
Reviewers are currently be recruited for an upcoming special edition of the Developmental Disabilities Network Journal (DDNJ) focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in disability services. This special issue is a collaboration between DDNJ and the AUCD Multicultural Council (MCC). Individuals with broad expertise are being saught in disability research, policy analysis, participatory action research, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) Calls for the Support, Protection and Safety of Ukrainians with Disabilities
The needs of Ukrainians with disabilities must not be ignored. Ukraine ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2010. CRPD Article 11 specifically addresses situations of risk and humanitarian emergencies and the protection obligations that exist in the context of armed conflict. UN Security Council Resolution 2475, unanimously adopted in 2019, also calls upon member states to "protect persons with disabilities in conflict situations and to ensure they have access to justice, basic services and unimpeded humanitarian assistance." These international humanitarian and human rights laws must be respected. AUCD strongly supports humanitarian efforts focused on the needs of people with disabilities and their families in Ukraine.

The UIC IDHD 2021 Summary of COVID-19 Awareness Projects

In the Spring of 2021, the Chicagoland Disabled People of Color with the support of the Institute on Disability and Human Development (IDHD), partnered with the National COVID-19 Resiliency Network (NCRN) through a mini-grant, where Jae Jin Pak and Timotheus Garden created events and information on COVID-19 Vaccines, resources, and updates to the disability community in the Chicagoland area.
